The Road Not Taken

Taking the Road Home

Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Not Taken, wasn’t talking about the way our GPS was trying to send us down, but in the end, “knowing how way leads on to way…..”  it is doubtful that we will be standing at this crossroad in the wood again.  On Sunday morning, September 21st we chose a safer road to navigate as we left Hagerstown/Antietam Battlefield KOA, rather than this country trail.

Our Next Hitching Post: Ft. Chiswell, Virginia

We parked and hitched up Sunday evening at Ft. Chiswell RV Park, Max Meadows, Virginia.  This Wythe County community is named after a frontier fort built in 1758 during the French and Indian War. The fort was located along the junction of The Great Trading Path and Richmond Road as a strategic outpost.  The present day crossroads for the community, I-77 and I-81 corridor made this a convenient way point in our journey home.

We have camped here at Ft. Chiswell enroute for Candice’s baby shower in New York. It is a safe haven for the night and easy to access.  We are surrounded by mountains in the distance.  There are sheep on the hillside above the pool and cows in the valley past the office.  Yes, there is highway noise in the distance, but there is also a really good Mexican restaurant across the street!

Weary Travelers

Ed injured his knee somehow last night while hooking up the motorhome to plumbing and power.  Now, he got a hurt back and a really painful knee.  We need to get home so we can just rest from the road.  Thankfully my back is some better and I feel like with determination and God’s blessing will get home, but we still have one more night stay in Sweetwater, Tennessee.

In our younger years we might have driven the six hours rom Ft. Chiswell to Huntsville in one day.  Nowadays though, it’s just not worth the rush.  Once we get home, we have so much to unload and we’d rather be fresh and alert driving the Magic Bus.

On to Sweetwater

We’ve spent the night in Sweetwater so many times, I thought we had friends there!  Ed reminded me that, before we had the RV, we used Sweetwater as a launching point for The Tail of the Dragon drive.  Since we purchased the RV in 2019, we haul the Miata on our aluminum trailer and Camp at Up the Creek Campground for the Miatas at the Gap event.

We will set up camp tonight at Blue Moon RV Park, in Athens, Tennessee tonight. Booking on the fly is tricking.  This was as close to Sweetwater as  we could get.

Happy to be from the South and pleased to have the opportunity to travel with my husband as we retire together.
